1.    Describe thesetting of the story.  What doesthe interior of the Younger house tell you about the family that lives there?

 

2.    What is yourimpression of Ruth?  From what youhave seen so far, how would you describe the relationship between Ruth andTravis?  Ruth and Walter? Ruth andBeneatha? Ruth and Mama? 

 

3.    When familymembers argue, the reasons may be more complex than they at first appear.  What are the surface reasons for thearguments between Walter and Ruth? What do you think some of the deeper reasons for the conflict mightbe?  Do you side with one more thanwith the other?  Which one?  Why?

 

4.    What isBeneatha like?  What is her“dream?”  How does Walter feelabout her plans?  Why?

7.    Who is GeorgeMurchison and how do Beneatha, Ruth, and Mama feel about him? 

 

8.    Why does Mamaslap Beneatha?  What is Beneatha’sreaction?  What do you think wouldhave happened if Beneatha had stomped out of the house?  Does this argument remind you of anyyou have ever had?
